The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
