The Duke of York gives up his designation as Duke of York.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has encountered mounting pressure over his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

The royal is relinquishing his titles, including the the Duke, he has declared in a individual message.

He has been under mounting attention over his associations with sex offender Epstein, with demands for the Palace to take action against him.

That now looks to have caused the prince deciding to of his own accord give up his titles and to relinquish involvement of the prestigious order.

In his announcement he said he continued to "vigorously refute the allegations against me".

"In talks with the sovereign, and my immediate and extended family, we have agreed the ongoing allegations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family," said a statement from the royal.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my relatives and nation first.

"I support my decision five years ago to step back from public life.

"With His Majesty's consent, we think I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer use my honor or the distinctions which have been granted to me. As I have said previously, I firmly deny the accusations against me."

Prince Andrew has encountered a range of issues, among them a court case he resolved with the plaintiff, inquiries about his money matters and his involvement with an alleged foreign agent.

He will stay a royal - but will cease to be the the Duke, a honor received from his the late Queen, the Queen Elizabeth II.

He had already ended to be a "active member" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer participated at public engagements. His position now will be even more reduced.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer the Duchess, but their daughters will carry on to have the title of royal princess.

He has encountered intense examination over his associations with convicted sex offender Epstein, more recently including questions about when he had really severed contact.

In his media discussion, he had said that he had cut off all connections with the financier after they had been pictured together in New York in the end of 2010.

But emails sent in February 2011 later emerged implying that the prince had in private continued in touch with the financier, for example exchanging a communication: "Remain connected and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been mounting frustration in the monarchy at the scandals that continued to envelop the royal.

Soon a posthumous memoir by Giuffre will be published which is anticipated to draw further attention on his connection with the plaintiff and Epstein.
