Last year, actor Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, may align so closely with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although he is called a different name, the implication is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The position was effectively a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to this process stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• According to a journalist who researched his rise, the future president merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not involved with field operations.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been triggered by the actor's arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters replacing Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. He is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to question.
