NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
