California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom commented when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.
"The future will decide," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
The California governor has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and warned eliminating the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, in the wake of a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had before announced he was holding back $40m from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration responded in a last month's release countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recently conducted survey revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has grown to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.
In previous months, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
