Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
