A Forecasting Platform Trader Profited $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the odds had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
